Student comments after course completion:
From Nicole: Yes, I was able to log in and get setup in the instructor portal. I enjoyed the training and have recommended you to my friends as well.
From Ken: Yes, I had no problem successfully adding my Pistol Instructor Cert on the NRA site. I enjoyed the class (not the long drive) and Thank You for putting so much effort into making the class Fun and Educational.
From Joseph: John, I just wanted to tell you how nice of an experience your class was, to be completely honest I was expecting a different kind of demeanor from a USMC Col but you really impressed me with how graceful you are and the humility you show and after hearing your short testimony on how you were led to the service it’s no wonder. I’m glad our paths could cross Col, I pray God continues to use and bless y’all. Sincerely Joseph
From Lauryn: Mr. Sargent does a very thorough job with the pistol course. You learn how to have the right attitude, knowledge, and skills necessary to shoot accurately and efficiently. Everything he teaches you has purpose and application and he does a great job of getting through a lot of essential knowledge in a decent time. He helped me learn to take my gun apart, clean it, lubricate it, and put it back together. His tips for shooting accurately really helped me and my accuracy significantly improved after the course. One of the most helpful things for me was getting to use a laser shooter with his gun to practice all the tips on stance, breathing, hand grip, trigger pull, and focusing on the sights before we practiced with live ammo. Having time to practice all those tools without worrying about recoil or explosion from the shot helped create muscle memory, familiarity, and comfort before going to the range. He has a lot of great tips that helped me improve a ton.
Everyone should take this course if they want to own and operate a firearm. It helps keep you shooting safely and accurately.
Thank you again!
From Brett: What a great class, John was informative and personable all while maintaining control of the class. The laser training system he has was a useful tool for practice. I would recommend him for anyone looking for a NRA certified course!
From David: As a fellow believer, it was fantastic to meet Mr. John, to learn from him, and to glean wisdom and knowledge from his diverse and extensive experience. I learned a lot and I feel I will be able to become a much more proficient shooter because of it. I hope to improve continually and pass some of the invaluable information and knowledge I learned on to those I interact with. Mr. John taught the class in such a way that the value of the course material was exponentially enhanced. 10/10. - David
From John: Your Student Course schedule was convenient, considering the wretched, inclement weather that entire day. I would have liked the opportunity to have actually participated in the live fire range qualification target shoot but, the weather wasn’t cooperating for nearly that whole week; and alternatively,my Marksmanship Level already was sufficient enough that it was your discretion to forego that requirement; other than that, the course was interesting, I enjoyed the training videos that you showed to the class. Mrs. Betsy Sargent is a wonderful Hostess. I enjoyed being there to learn the N.R.A. Pistol Instructor Course.
From Jeremy, Army officer: John offers a no nonsense approach backed by real world experience to deliver quality training. I recommend to anyone looking to get their CCW or Instructor certification look him up if you can.
From Rex: The student responses on this website speak for themselves; so I'll keep it simple - If you are looking for a marksmanship tutor, look no further, It is a rare opportunity to be taught by such a highly qualified instructor!
From Jonathan: John is a great instructor and a fantastic human. Attending the course was a pleasure, and I would recommend the course to anyone that is experienced with a pistol and has a passion for teaching and information sharing. The purpose of completing the course is to enable more to give back to the shooting community. John leads by example.
From Ken: This is a class that is taught “by the book.” Whether you are experienced or just a beginner this class is worth attending. The class is personal and friendly. The atmosphere is calm and relaxing. You would be hard-pressed to find a more professional and well-trained instructor than John. You will finish this course with a better understanding of firearm safety and more confidence about the safe use of a firearm.
From Todd, retired US Army officer: Great course. Excellent use of time All topics were covered as needed. The basement classroom worked very well. The introduction to the laser training system was definitely an added bonus.
From Geff: I am a new shooter and decided to take the BOPS course with John after coming across MarksmanshipTutor.com during an online search for NRA courses in the Lynchburg area. I wanted to learn about gun safety and some basic pistol shooting technique, to be able to apply for a CC permit. John’s qualifications and his experience with firearms are truly impressive, and the course is thorough and well-structured. It was one of the most memorable days I can recall, for the course and range experience, and for the personal conversation we enjoyed. I would recommend both John and the BOPS course to others without hesitation.
From Pat: “I had completed my Basic of Pistol Instruction – Instructor Led Training before I came to John Sargent for the Instructors’ Course. I should have contacted him earlier and asked questions as he is very forthcoming and straight on the information and lessons he teaches. He not only teaches safety but also advocates for it. John truly believes that for a better society, we need to spread the word on how firearm safety and understanding is important. Of course next only to God and the United States of America! Thank you sir and more power to you! It was a truly great opportunity to learn from you!”
From Burton and Tara: From the moment you welcomed us into your home, we knew we had made the right choice in coming to you for training. We covered a lot of material that day, but your clear presentation, visual aides, real life examples made everything easy to understand and retain. After completing the course, we feel well-prepared to begin our new adventure as NRA-certified pistol instructors. Thank you!
From an unidentified student: Professionalism, Quality, Timeliness
I enjoyed your authentic style of communicating. You genuinely enjoy what you do and it comes across so. You are no respecter of persons. That was great!
From Ronald: I took Mr. Sargent's NRA basic pistol and pistol instructor course. He was very professional and knowledgeable. He took his time in making sure myself and the other students fully understood all the materials. The class was enjoyable and I learned a lot.
From Burton: Thank you for your honesty (he is referring to my inadvertently overcharging him and sending him a refund), we enjoyed the class and are excited for the next step. I wanted to tell you yesterday but didn’t. you have an awesome platform. You started the class witnessing about Jesus Christ in your life . And I hope and pray the seed you planted will take root in others. Thank you again and God bless.
From Kevin: Thank you again for everything, you put in a great class. I really enjoyed putting some rounds down range! Great way to end the day.
From Todd: Mr. Sargent – I really enjoyed your presentation of the NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting (BOPS) Course and the BOPS Instructor Course. Thank you so much for your time, expertise and hospitality. You and your wife graciously welcomed us into your home to attend your class. Your help in my journey to become a Certified NRA Pistol Instructor was invaluable. Your classes were very interesting and informative, as you bring to the classroom your many years of experience with the USMC, the federal government, and your world travels. Thank you again for all you do, and I look forward to referring you to others who are looking to become a certified instructor. May God bless you and your family! - Be Safe Always!! - Todd
From Justin: John Sargent with Marksmanship Tutor, was a great teacher, his friendly demeanor made it feel more like a group of friends talking about firearms rather then a teacher-student situation. He answered any and all questions that we had and he made sure that we knew and understood the material before proceeding. I would definitely recommend anyone to taking any of John's classes. I know I have already recommended one person to him, myself.
From a retired Dept of Justice Special Agent; " I found John's firearms training class to be extremely informative and very well presented. John brings a lifetime of experience and training together to provide a great learning experience for anyone interested in responsible firearms ownership. I can highly recommend attending John's NRA training class to both inexperienced shooters and to those who are beginning their firearms instructor certification.
From Anthony: The class was good. I’m not a class room person. You you kept me interested. Good job I’m well pleased. Thanks For opening your home to us made it personal. Liked the smaller group.
From Jack: Your experience and personal insights made this class stand out from other classes I have taken. You took time to fully answer any questions we had and covered all of the NRA material efficiently. You have maintained contact with your students and shown a personal interest with each of us. Your demeanor made what could be mundane material interesting. I am amazed at how all of the students in my class made a connection with each other.
From Harrison: Thanks so much for working with us and bringing us through our certification process. Your class was great in that you brought us through the required material and also because you took the time to introduce us to the layout of the NRA Instructors website. That helped me out for one. I have been waiting for an email from the NRA that would provide me with a new instructor number so that I could register with that one but I have yet to receive such an email. Today I ended up just going into the website with my pre-existing number and registered with that one so I am in their system and good to go!
From what I have gathered in conversation with the group I came with (Beth, Jack, Anthony, and myself), it seems that every one of us has been successful in registering.
Thank you John for a good and successful class!
From Nick: First, I would like to start with, I was Privileged to Become Instructor Under Mr. Sargent. As Far as Class, Basic Pistol & Pistol Instructor, I was satisfied 100%. Mr. Sargent have great knowledge When it comes to Safety. I would also like to thank Mrs. Sargent for being kind & Caring. When I first Arrived at their Home, I just walked in to Wall of Love when I entered Their home and Met Mrs. Sargent. Such a great Positive environment. I hope MR. Sargent don't change the location. Love his Home and Positive environment Created by Mrs. Sargent, Trey, & Other Family Members. Thank you again & I'll be taking more classes from U Sir.
From BA, retired IBM management: John, thank you very much for a very informative and enjoyable training experience. You and your wife are great hosts and made all the class members very comfortable. I will always remember the NRA mantra of Knowledge, Skills, and Attitude as you taught to us. I intend to follow your example and impart those same values to all those I teach.
I highly recommend John Sargent to all those who wish to become NRA BOPS instructors!
From Greg: I'm a former LEO and currently in-active overseas security contractor, I have to say that in my honest opinion, John is a very good instructor who brings a personal and family atmosphere to his classes that is unparalleled by other instructors that I have trained under.
He likes to make things simple and emphasize the basics and safety but make no mistake he has a lot of knowledge of firearms and the material that is covered. He has a great instinct and ability to read his his students needs as well as their capabilities. No doubt this comes from his former military service and leadership while serving in the Marines.
His wife also is a very nice lady and they make you very welcome. I greatly thank him and his wife for welcoming me into their home as well as treating me with the upmost respect and politeness that I usually don't find in the world on a regular basis. I strongly encourage any new or experienced shooter to attend a class or two with John so they can learn not just the material with him, but also his lesson in how to conduct yourself better as an instructor so others will come into the fold of both the NRA, the 2nd Amendment supporting mindset family and the shooting community in general. We need like minded people to help save out Constitutional Republic and John is right there on point!
Thank You John! (Mrs. Sargent thank you for your hospitality as well! :) )
From not identified: "The Basic Pistol and follow on Instructor course offered by Mr. Sargent was found to be most beneficial. Every aspect of his curriculum and presentation was meticulously planned and thought out. From the moment you reach out to him for scheduling, to the time you depart upon course completion, you feel as if he is personally investing in your future abilities. John's extensive background and knowledge could be most intimidating. However, his polite, humble, down-to-earth demeanor puts one at ease as soon as he greets you at his door. The hospitable environment both he and his wife have created has one feeling as if they are part of his family within in the first hour of the class.
I have been an active LEO in Virginia for 26 years. I wish I had learned of Mr. Sargent earlier in my career. I shall definitely return to receive additional instruction from him. It was an honor to train under a true American Patriot!"
From Kirsten, trauma nurse: Thank you so much for everything! Your laid-back, welcoming attitude made the instructor course very enjoyable. I would recommend your class to anyone interested in the instructor training for pistol! Your wife was a pleasure and it was very kind of her to feed us.
From Jim, retired deputy sheriff: The hospitality that the Sargent family showed me was more than appreciated. They were genuinely happy that I was a guest in their home and went out of their way to make me feel welcome. John is more than knowledgeable in his capacity as both a NRA Firearms Instructor and Training Counselor, and conveys his instruction in a manner that is both easily understood and enjoyable. What more, class size and cost is smaller than you will find from other firearms instructors, bringing a better quality instruction at a lower cost.
From Dr. Mimi, retired military officer and surgeon: Thank you so much for the instruction. Even though I have had prior varied types of military training, yours was superb and on spot. I picked up many new tools for my bag, but best of all, was your attitude. Learning in a soft spoken, direct and Christian environment was the best!
My thanks to Betsy for adding to the supportive environment and making my time there memorable. Hope to keep in touch, and I plan to send my son to you when he can advance his training. Thanks again, Mimi
From Andre (US Army vet): I want to say that my experience with Mr. and Mrs. Sargent during my class was excellent. I've never trained in an environment that made me feel so much like family. The Sargents hospitality alone was worth taking the course with them but John's subject matter knowledge and years of experience were more than I could've hoped for. From one Christian Veteran to another, thank you for all your help and efforts to welcome me into the ranks. I know that I will always be able to count on you should I need anything down the road. Thank you again, and keep fighting the good fight.
From Richard: I could not think of anything more you could do for the course. The posters are helpful for referring to, but the monitor for the laptop, to me, is most effective. After attending John's course for Basic Pistol Instructor, I feel I have gained not only a confident grasp to teaching this material, but also a fantastic resource to utilize in the future. John explains the course content in an extremely relatable method, and adds his own personal experiences to the content. Attending his class was one of the best firearms decisions I have made in a very long time. I would do again.
From Lynne: Thank you and Betsy for a fulfilling weekend of instruction and welcoming hospitality. You taught me quite a lot and I will remember it. Thank you both for your time and consideration. I really appreciate your patience and knowledge, and your resourcefulness at the range. I know that everyone in attendance would agree with me. And Betsy’s lunch and the peanut butter/chocolate cupcakes were great!
From David (pistol instructor course completed): I just wanted to send you a quick note to thank you for using the time so efficiently in teaching the instructor course. I very much enjoyed our time together and appreciated your knowledge and instruction.
Also, please extend my appreciation to Betsy for sharing her gift of hospitality. The lunch was outstanding and plentiful. As you stated, you are truly blessed.
From Charlie Ferguson, (firefighter, instructor course): John is a very professional instructor who knows his material and craft. As a instructor in other subjects, it only took a few minutes to appreciate the high quality instruction he provides. I would recommend his services to anyone. Charlie's website is: www.pceholsters.com.
From B. (retired Virginia State Police, instructor course): have been fortunate enough to take 2 courses with John. Both courses were thorough and well planned. John has a wealth of experience and does a great job passing it along during his training.
From N. (currently a sky marshal who took the pistol instructor course): It was a pleasure to take the course with you. Awesome hospitality you and Betsy. Great instruction. Great setup. My only suggestion is props. Would have liked to see the NRA posters. The inert and blanks were good too see. The setup and use of the monitor was great. I think I will teach like that too. It was stress free and I enjoyed the course. (PS I now have the posters he mentions - John).
From Roberto: It was a pleasure to take classes with John. He and his family are very special. They made us feel like part of the family. Despite my experience with firearms, I learned a lot from John, not only because of the courses I took with him but also because of his experience as a Marine.
The first course I took with him was the NRA Basic Pistol, and then I took NRA Instructor Pistol. I recommend it to anyone who is looking to take the basic course or if they are looking to become a Certified NRA Instructor.
From Matt: We are good and have our certificates. I had a respectful learning experience in an honorable environment. It was peaceful and comforting to have an instructor care about the quality of training and their students.
From David: If you want to get your concealed weapons permit, you won't find a better instructor than John Sargent. John's knowledge of guns and gun safety is unsurpassed. He is clear, thorough, and can answer all your questions. Besides that, he is gracious, friendly and a Christian gentleman. John was born to be a Marine (he is a Lieutenant-Colonel, U.S. Marine Corps., retired) and his enthusiasm is contagious. I can recommend John Sargent without reservation.
From David: I thought the class was pretty good. The hands on was also good. I saw the marksmanship levels how do we move up and who moved us up.
From Karen: Thank you John Sargent for being a unbelievable instructor training for firearms!
From Joshua: I would have to say are that I enjoyed the course thoroughly. In my opinion, I thought the entire course was planned well, and well taught. Just in the few hours I had to shoot, my shot improved drastically. I like being able to shoot my own weapon as well as being able to shoot some of his weapons. I also enjoyed getting to shoot with a laser as for that was my first time getting to do that. The course was perfect and I finished it more knowledgeable then before.
From Becky: I am a middle-aged, well-educated, God-fearing, America-loving woman who frequently drives around the state alone. I didn't have much exposure to guns except TV or movies, so I took a short intro to guns at a range a few yrs ago, & it was a complete waste of time - I never went back. When I took John Sargent's Pistol Basics Class last week, I was nervous about handling guns AND so overwhelmed about how much info I needed to learn from the NRA book, that I almost cancelled at the last minute. I was sure I wouldn't pass the written test, much less be able to fire a weapon straight, forget about the Concealed Carry Permit! But guess what, I did - and I give John all the credit for giving me the confidence AND skill to feel comfortable with a gun! He was INCREDIBLY calm, & patiently answered my endless questions. He really has an amazing GIFT for empowering his students. I didn't plan to get a pistol when I signed up, but I am now eager to get my own, so I can keep practicing my new skills at a local range. ("Remember, the gun is not your friend - never lose your respect for what it can do.") THANK YOU, John - I never thought I would go from clueless to qualified in one day!
From Lee: Thank you very much for your course and training! The class was perfectly paced and as seen by both myself and my classmates performance and engagement, despite or different levels of comfort and background, quite effective. I wouldn't mind working towards the qualifications for instructor but I doubt I would actually teach, given my time constraints... However being able to shoot better, more reliability in my shots, and more knowledge I can help pass on to others while at the range or in general would be fantastic. Thank you again for a safe and productive day at the range. And yes, I will always remember the no gun is my friend, they are tools capable of taking a life, be it mine or someone else's.
From Matt: Had a great experience with John from Marksmanship Tutor. He was very knowledgeable and made a rookie like me feel comfortable throughout the process. He has a wealth of knowledge and is an extremely personable and nice guy to spend time with. I would recommend this service to anyone looking for pistol or conceal carry training.
John, thank you again for conducting this important course for Diane. Overall the training went extremely well. Your teaching and coaching style enabled her to quickly become more knowledgeable and confident. I believe this was most visible during the actual range firing session. Diane will complete the course evaluation form and we will get it to you. Bravo Zulu! Chuck
From Melissa: The basic pistol course is very informative. Mr John breaks down the information so that it is understandable but also interesting; he really makes sure the student understands the material and gives the student different options of pistols to try at the range, so he/she can get the full experience of using a handgun. I highly recommend this course.
From Linda: I did enjoy the class today. I felt like I learned a lot, and understand the laws better and know the basics of gun use. It was great to try different kinds of guns at the shooting range. I'm glad I had a chance to shoot with a gun with a laser. That sure is a nice option, and my shots were more accurate. I definitely feel like I have a good knowledge of gun use. The one-on-one class was a bonus. John really knows his stuff! Thanks so much! I've put the evaluation in an envelope to go out in the mail tomorrow.
From Allison: John Sargent’s pistol course was extremely beneficial. Prior to this course I was very hesitant when handling a gun. John took the time to answer all of my questions as well as give me a very solid foundation on gun safety and handling. He allowed me to shoot multiple pistols as well as helped me to perfect my aim. I am now confident and comfortable with my pistol. I know that if I ever needed to protect my family I would know exactly what to do. Thank you for a wonderful course.

From Chris and Irina: It was a pleasure to take Col. John Sargent's pistol course and learn all his valuable insight. The classroom time was one-on-one, which made us feel more comfortable. At the range, he allowed us the use of his pistols and ammunition, while providing us with sound advice of how to be more accurate and safe with our weapons. Taking this course was definitely a great decision and we have John to thank for making it enjoyable! Очень Приятно и Спасибо Большое!! (Very pleasant to meet you and thank you very much - I speak Russian. John)

From Bob and Jennifer: My daughter and I attended the NRA FIRST Steps Pistol Orientation class through "Marksmanship Tutor". The instruction consisted of a sit down class and a follow on trip to the range. In the classroom, we learned the NRA's rules for safe gun handling; the particular pistol model parts and operation; ammunition; shooting fundamentals; maintenance. The class included several handouts which included the book; "NRA Guide to the Basics of Pistol shooting". The pistols we handled in the classroom were the same ones we used at the range, .22, .380 and 9mm. John provided the hand guns and ammo for the range portion of the class.
John Sargent is an excellent instructor with a wealth of knowledge and a passion to impart it to his students. He made us feel comfortable and he was not satisfied until we fully understood the material. He ensured we knew all safety aspects of gun handling and proper range protocol. He conducted himself professionally at all times. His demeanor is calming and he especially was helpful on the range to ensure safety, proper breathing, grip and aiming. He started us off with a .22, then on to a .380 and finally a 9mm. From the first email until course completion his correspondence was prompt, clear and everything was started on time. Additionally, he was really flexible with our work schedules.
This program fulfills the State of Virginia requirements for a concealed handgun permit. Upon completion we received signed NRA certificates of class completion. For everything we learned and the services and ammo/handguns provided the cost was only $70.00 per person, I can only say, "Wow. What a bargain!" We highly recommend Marksmanship Tutor.

I highly recommend Marksmanship Tutor. I went into the concealed carry course with many questions, all of which were answered without my asking a single one! Mr. Sargent has a wealth of knowledge and experience from his various backgrounds. I think what I appreciated most of all was his clear way of taking things from the explanatory stage to a demonstration at the range. This course is full of information that will successfully help beginners take their first steps, and equip them with the information they need to responsibly carry, operate, and fire a handgun.--Louie

My husband and I recently took a concealed carry course from Marksmanship Tutor. I was very impressed with the course. I grew up with guns, but had not used handguns before, so I gained familiarity with handguns and their proper usage and a refresher on gun safety. I was very impressed with the thoroughness of the course and the emphasis on safety. My husband did not grow up with guns, and I could see that although much of this was new to him, he was able to retain the information presented due to the engaging instruction and hands-on approach Mr. Sargent took. I also appreciated that Mr. Sargent made sure that we were able to handle our weapons safely and shoot safely. I gained a comfort level with handguns that I did not have prior to the course. The extra experience that Mr. Sargent has from his time in the Marines and NIS shows, and makes it well worth attending a course with him. --Abigail

From Kathy: I was extremely satisfied with the class I took. It is clearly obvious that Mr. John Sargent has an extensive level of firearm experience. He spent almost 2 hours of one on one instruction with me at the range. I learned a tremendous amount in this time and this , in my opiniopn, is over and above what is needed for the state permit. I would definitely recommend this class to anyone who needs it in order to obtain a concealed handgun permit. Also, Mr. Sargent offers shooting lessons. My husband took a " permit class" at a local gun store. When I told my husband the amount of instruction I received from John Sargent in taking his class, my husband said his class cannot compare . The instructor at my husabnd's class simply watched my husband shoot a few rounds and basically told jokes throughout the classroom instruction. Do not sell yourself short by taking just any class. They are not all the same. You will not be disappointed in taking this class or other shooting lessons from Mr. Sargent. You will be impressed by both his level of experience and professionalism. I was a little nervous at first at the range but Mr. Sargent did not make me feel intimidated in any way. I came away from his class with a higher level of self confidence about my shooting ablities and knowledge of shooting.

From Tiffany BEFORE her course: "Anyway, I have a terrible phobia of guns, pistols especially. The last time one was in my hand (12yrs ago) I had a panic attack and broke down sobbing. I'm ready to beat it. I want to be able to go shooting with my husband and I want to know I'm not controlled by that fear anymore."
From Tiffany AFTER her course: "John, Thank you so much for the course yesterday! My husband was nearly speechless he was so surprised at what I'd done. I've shared all the information with him and I think he's looking forward to checking out the app (Legal Heat for Android-added by John)) you told me about. I learned so much, not just about pistols, but about myself. I was surprised to learn that I have much more fear of manipulating unloaded weapons than actually shooting loaded ones, but then I guess the whole definition of a phobia is that it's illogical. I really appreciate your patience and positive reinforcement. It feels great to know that I faced that fear and now I can keep moving towards becoming the master of my weapon as well. My son was really proud of me too ;) Thank you again." Tiffany

"Just wanted to let you know how much Chris and I enjoyed being in you First Steps Pistol Orientation class. The small group setting is perfect and well worth the money. We appreciate your passion and concern for handgun safety and the tremendous responsibility of owning a handgun. John, you were more than thorough, you were precise in your instruction and your class, as my son said, "Was something we both needed and John was great and I want to come back for more". I know everyone has the Constitutional right to own a firearm but that doesn't mean that they should. Personally speaking, too bad the First Steps Pistol Orientation isn't a requirement after the background check is done prior to the purchase being approved. Maybe one day. Finally this class answers all the who, what, when, where and hows of concealed carry requirements and open carry as well and the range instruction from John Sargent which greatly improved my skills. Highly recommended! Fantastic Job Lt. Col. Sargent! God bless you John." Hal and Chris

"I took NRA FIRST Steps Pistol Orientation through Marksmanship Tutor, it was a truly informative course! I was impressed with the small group size and ability to ask questions and have one on one training about all aspects of gun safety. The information was pertinent and made a lot of sense the way he explained it. He was patient and very calm, which helped me not to be nervous at the course. I really liked that I learned how to thoroughly clean my weapon after our time at the shooting range. I would definitely recommend him to anyone!!" Laurel
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
" I found John through the NRA's website and took the Basic First Step Pistol course recently. We started out the course at John's home, where he educated us in different types/calibers of handguns and the best type of ammunition to buy, how to grip the gun, etc. Along with these basic subjects, I felt that he presented us with information to make us carefully consider the ramifications and responsibilities of gun ownership and usage. It is a bit of a nerve-wracking experience at first, especially when we arrived at the range and started to physically shoot, but John has a very calming and positive presence. By the time I was done shooting, I felt much more confident and more of a "master of my gun" than a "servant to my gun". I would definitely recommend this course and plan on taking the next course level as well. Many thanks to John for his patience and encouragement and the sharing of his extremely in-depth knowledge of guns!" Rachel

"CCW Class Review: This class was really helpful. In order to get your permit to LEGALLY conceal, a class like this must be taken. In my honest opinion John Sargent does a wonderful job teaching it. John Sargent is a certified NRA instructor with both street knowledge and book knowledge. The class taught me a lot of information about firearms, ammunition, holsters, and safety tips that common knowledge didn't give me. The instructor (John Sargent) was very thorough and informative. Every question I asked him he had a direct answer for me. He was very helpful in signing me up with the NRA and the steps to takes his class. The thing I loved most about the class was the practical part....the part where he literally taught me how to shoot. He brought us to the gun range and taught us how to do the basics with the information he taught us during the class part. Overall...I'm very pleased with the class, the instructor, and everything else. I'll definitely recommend this class and instructor to my friends and family members." Derrick
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"I am sure many people think that shooting a gun is easy but it is not. After all, it only takes one mistake for disaster to happen. John, a seasoned instructor and Marine veteran, was amazing! He held my attention during his class very well. Before you even fire a weapon he goes through the mechanics of it. Following good habits is the key to enjoying marksmanship training. He makes sure you know what good habits to have when handling a firearm. While on the range he makes sure you are practicing those good habits! Practice makes perfect. Sign up, you will not be disappointed. I am very glad that I took his course." Carl
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"I found John Sargent to be a very capable and insightful instructor. He is a good communicator and has thorough knowledge of guns and marksmanship. I actually had two of my teenagers take the class with me and we all learned alot. I especially appreciate John's emphasis on safety and responsible handling of a weapon. John worked very well with my kids and they learned to handle the gun with confidence and yet definite respect for it's lethality. During the initial classroom training, John was very open to questions and made sure we understood the features of the weapon. The range conditions for the actual shooting were topnotch. I've been in a lot of gun ranges and John uses excellent facilities. I still remember taking a gun safety course when I was a teenager and I'm really glad that my kids got a similar experience with John. This training has laid a good foundation for any future use of weapons in a responsible manner." Don

"After a long hiatus from handgun shooting I was offered the chance to take a NRA First Steps Pistol Orientation from John Sargent. Mr. Sargent was thorough and detailed in both the classroom and live fire range portions of the course. I came into the course having owned firearms previously but never having shot the variety of handguns Mr. Sargent exposed me to. His method of starting the live fire portion of the course with a .22 and then working up to a .45 helped me with my accuracy and confidence. John Sargent is an excellent teacher and one I cannot recommend highly enough. He has an excellent testimony of faithful service to his church in both domestic and foreign fields and he has served his country as a officer in the United States Marine Corps. I would trust him to teach my wife and daughters to shoot and his First Steps Pistol Orientation would make a great gift at anytime. In fact, it would make a great date idea for a married couple or a daddy date for a dad and his daughter or some guy time with a son." Brent

"Thanks so much for taking the time to help me with my new .38. It has been many years since I had been shooting, and I have to admit I was a little hesitant to try my new gun, as well as a little intimidated. However, the time you took explaining the basics and showing me how to shoot has relieved my tension. Your instruction with some of your other guns, especially the 9 mm, was really a good experience for me, and helped with my confidence. I am quite comfortable with my new gun and with practice, I hope to shoot as well as you! Excellent class and information beyond the basics!" Kym

"We took the First Steps Pistol Orientation NRA class as neither one of us knew anything about guns or gun safety. We found John's instruction to be informative and clear. He was very patient with everyone in the class. We learned the responsibility of gun ownership, gun safety, legalities and hands on practice. We appreciated the opportunity to go to the range and actually handle and shoot some of John's pistols. We then had the knowledge we needed to go out and purchase our own pistol. We learned a lot, but realize that is just the beginning. We still have a lot to learn and intend to take more classes with John." Dave and Pat

"I was referred to Mr. John Sargent (LTC Ret) by the Camp Allen Weapons Range manager for basic small weapon instruction for myself and my daughters (22 and 16 years old). I admit to being somewhat skeptical about a stranger teaching such a sensitive subject in this volatile world that we live in. After having completed the training, I can only share how wonderfully pleased I am with the experience. Mr. Sargent made our accommodation primary in our scheduling of the class. The class itself provided us with safety training, information on the legal ramifications of gun ownership and usage, and then practical usage techniques. The class was conducted with a high level of conscientiousness from the opening prayer to every opportunity provided on the range. Mr. Sargent proved himself to be a professional of the highest quality, bringing US Marine level standards on the "best and safest" way to handle a weapon to our lesson. I do not think I could have made a better choice of instructional environments for my two most precious students. Overall, I could not have asked for more. Thank you Mr. Sargent." Ella

"Thank you so much for the gun safety course that you taught. I have been afraid of guns most of my life, But with my husband gone a lot in the military, and small children to protect, I felt it was necessary to take this course. I'm so glad I did! You were far more patient than I knew was even possible with me and all my questions (and Wyatt Earp tendencies at the range), and I am so appreciative! You have given me a confidence that I didn't know I could have when I came to handguns. I now know that I have the ability to protect my children if necessary. Your course is a must for all women. Thanks again!!"Kris

" I started with a decent amount of pistol experience but very little knowledge of the various laws associated with carrying and transporting weapons and ammunition. This course brought me up to speed quickly and even included a few helpful tips on shooting accuracy. More importantly, my wife and daughter (13 y/o) had very little experience and were quite nervous about shooting a gun. Within a few hours, John had them fully indoctrinated on gun safety and demonstrating safe shooting techniques on the range. This course is essential for any family with guns in the home or looking to bring guns into the home. I highly recommend Mr. Sargent for his knowledge, professionalism and experience. John – Thank you for your service to our country for so many years and thank you for making my home a safe place." – Eric

"Thank you John, for teaching the "NRA First Steps Pistol Orientation" class. You are a born instructor, very knowledgable, patient and thorough. I was very nervous about guns but was determined to know how to use one safely before we brought one into our home. I didn't want to be a statistic. After taking this class I know by God's grace and your valuable instruction, along with continued practice, I'll be able to confidently handle a weapon if and when the need arises. (I was sure I wasn't going to pass before I reached the range). I'm amazed at all you've accomplished in this one class and my nervousness is replaced with a healthy respect for common sense and safety precautions. Thank you and God bless. (class attended 5/18/13)." - Kathy and Dave
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"John was a tremendous blessing! His teaching is comprehensive, but yet he does a fabulous job of really helping you learn the basics. He teaches you truly how to master the weapon instead of letting it master you! We highly recommend any of his courses!" -Matt and Amy
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"I thought the course was great. You are very knowledgable and made us feel very comfortable around the weapons. I feel like I learned a lot and am capable now of starting to improve on my own both on the range and off. The only the that I would improve upon would be a discussion about Glocks. You mentioned that they are different and that you didn't like them. However, they are popular and widely used. It would be interesting to learn more about that." Thanks, Matt (PS from John - Glocks are well-made, dependable and popular guns. Like anything else, they are a matter of personal preference.)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "John Sargent is one of the most experienced instructors I've ever met. After his NRA course I've learned to shoot more accurately, breathe properly while shooting, and understand the mechanics of the weapon better. Shortly after the classroom portion of the course I had time to go shooting at the range where I could apply what I learned and practice with a variety of pistols. Also, I want to thank John Sargent for sharing his knowledge and enthusiasm with me about selecting the right firearm and pinning down the reason for carrying it with me. I highly recommend this course to anyone willing to take on the responsibility of owning and carrying a firearm for self defense. Wonderful instruction and an extremely practical application of years of experience took me to a new level." Marina

"Leaving church one Sunday I saw the advertisement for marksmanship tutoring on John’s car; that was the encouragement needed to pursue a training course. I took the NRA FIRST Steps Pistol Orientation class that John teaches so I can get my concealed carry weapons permit. I enjoy target practice but have never had real instruction. John is a very good, patient, and detailed instructor. His extensive experience enhances the student learning. I loved the gun handling tips from a trained Marine. The range was great and I saw improvement in my shooting the very first time, the tips worked! I will continue to practice, practice, practice as promised to John, it’s worth making him proud. Thanks, John and keep up the great training". Tammie.

"After looking at several options for taking an NRA First Steps Class, I registered for the First Steps Pistol Orientation with John Sargent. John's presentation of the information was exceptionally thorough and presented in a way that made me feel comfortable about handling a firearm. After leaving the range, I felt more confident than I have ever been in handling my weapon. I have spoken to other people who have taken a class similar to this with other companies and from the information I have been given, there is no comparison between the range experience I received versus what other companies provide.
If anyone is considering taking a class such as this, I assure you that you will not be disappointed by taking the class offered by Marksmanship Tutor." Cathy
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "I learned of John through researching instructors in the Hampton Roads area. As a former gun owner, returning to ownership after 15 years, I wanted to find someone who I would be comfortable with, was knowledgeable about what they were teaching and instructed from a viewpoint of safety first. John was amazing, immediately creating an environment where I felt comfortable asking any questions I had. His background, real-life experience and credibility, allowed him to instruct from a deep position of knowledge, which only enhanced my learning. This occurred in both the classroom and range settings, where his instruction continued to build upon my comfort level. He was encouraging when needed, and provided direct actionable feedback. I will take further training from John after I spend time practicing, practicing, practicing. I will recommend John and his classes to everyone and anyone looking for instruction, and would without hesitation allow him to teach my family members if/when they are ready" Allen

"Prior to signing up for the NRA FIRST Steps Pistol course I had never shot a firearm. John and I spent a good amount of time in his home going over the key safety points, the law regarding carry and use of firearms, the key components and differences between revolvers and semi-auto pistols, and the different types of ammunition. After talking with him I was comfortable with holding firearms. At the range he once again pointed out the key safety requirements. He was encouraging, had valuable feedback to give, and did not rush me on the range. I was never once outside of my comfort zone. If you have never shot a firearm before, need a refresher, or are looking to get your VA CCW license I strongly suggest John Sargent as your instructor!" Jason
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"I would very highly recommend Mr. Sargent to anyone looking for a solid foundation regarding pistol safety and marksmanship. The small class size afforded ample time for questions and explanations, and John obviously has deep knowledge and experience in the subject. Plus, it was just plain FUN! thanks, John" Ken
